Founder and Coordinator
The Afghanistan and Central Asian Association was set up in 2003 to support Afghans and other refugees and asylum seekers in Lewisham, Southwark, Lambeth, Greenwich and Bromley to better understand UK life and culture by providing social, cultural and educational activities. We aim to be a leader in the support, development and integration of Afghan immigrants in the UK. We provide a range of support services for our target community including:
- English for Speakers of Other Languages and citizenship classes, Supplementary and mother tongue education classes for children and young people
- Advocacy, Information and guidance to New Afghans and Central Asian refugees
- Advice on welfare, housing, employment and how to start business
- Women’s support groups (training, workshop and advocacy)
- Interpretation and translation services
- Support for disadvantaged children and young people recently arrived in the UK through our drop in sessions, advice surgery and our Saturday School.
We aim to undertake a media project in Afghanistan which is relevant to the global objective as it strengthens the role of civil society in promoting human rights and democratic reform through a weekly radio programme, training for journalists and civil society forums. This project will aim to address improving human rights in Afghanistan, strengthening civil society and the independent media, enhancing the opportunities for marginalised groups to take part in political debate and to learn about human rights in an accessible format.
