The Afghanistan & Central Asian Association held a number of Sports Activities for 36 sessions for socially deprived children and young people in the South East of London. We have provided Exercise classes, swimming sessions and other sports activities such as Tennis, Football and Basketball.

Our Project mainly benefited young people from different backgrounds and ethnic groups such as Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Philippines, Somali, Uzbekistan, Nigeria etc. This is because they lack confidence, self esteem and physical fitness in the community they live in.

These young refugees and Asylum Seekers are further isolated as they do not have the funds to take part in typical sports activities which will help them get physically fit but also gain new skills.

We have become aware that many of our members who are refugees and asylum seekers have experienced difficulties in their lives in their own country but also now in the UK.

These sports activities have assisted the children and young refugees and young people in our community to regain their confidence and become more involved in the community by meeting new people and alleviating the difficulties which they face in the host community. We have included them in all activities, therefore they have felt more welcome and prepared to work hard and enjoy these sports through showing their own talent and skills.

Comments from our young participants:

‘I enjoyed taking part in the exercise activities with other young people. I feel that it is essential for a healthy life and you also feel happy. I have made many friends and gained confidence in my self.’

‘Taking part in sports activities in my local community has meant I have meet new people, made friends, solved my problems by taking part in leisure activities. I have also been able to join other young people from different ethnicity groups. Football for the sport I preferred as it is an exciting sport. My favourite team is Real Madrid.’

‘I was always bad at sports. In my school there are football and basketball competitions. I love playing sport games in my X-box, however now playing the sport has become just as fun. After taking part in sport activities, I felt that I learned new skills which I can use at my PE lessons at school.’
